Where to Find Top 10 U.S. Coffee Shops -- Not Just in NYC

The best coffee shop in the U.S. is Ultimo, in Philadelphia, and only two of the Top 10 are based in New York City, according to a ranking of the 33 finest.

Cafe Grumpy, a roastery and bakery with four outlets -- two in Manhattan and two in Brooklyn -- comes fifth. Joe the Art of Coffee, which has also just opened in Philadelphia, is ninth. Ithaca-based Gimme Coffee is second. Chains such as Stumptown, with stores in New York City, also make the Top 10.

America’s Best Coffee Shops was compiled by The Daily Meal, a website headed by the food writer Colman Andrews. Ten panelists -- including bloggers, baristas, roasters and Daily Meal editors -- came up with the rankings.

“We scoured for all the different coffee shops in the main cities of the U.S. and ranked them on the quality of the coffee served, the quality of the food, customer service, atmosphere and uniqueness,” the website’s drinks editor, Marcy Franklin, said in a telephone interview.

Here is the Daily Meal’s Top 10 list:

1. Ultimo Coffee, Philadelphia
2. Gimme Coffee, Ithaca, New York
3. Barista, Portland, Oregon
4. Courier Coffee, Portland, Oregon
5. Cafe Grumpy, New York City
6. Lamill Coffee Boutique, Los Angeles
7. Stumptown, national
8. Ritual Coffee Roasters, San Francisco
9. Joe the Art of Coffee, New York
10. Intelligentsia, national
