Chubu Electric to Get Spot Peru LNG as Ship Arrives at Kawagoe

Japan’s Chubu Electric Power Co. will receive a spot cargo of liquefied natural gas from Peru today, according to ship-tracking data.

The Valencia Knutsen, with a capacity of 173,400 cubic meters, is scheduled to arrive at Chubu Electric’s Kawagoe terminal in central Japan, according to ship transmissions captured by IHS Fairplay on Bloomberg. The ship sailed from Peru LNG’s terminal at Pampa Melchorita, where it loaded its cargo and departed Feb. 23.

Chubu Electric’s 5.43 million metric ton-a-year Kawagoe terminal started up in 1997, and receives long-term LNG supply from Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Qatar and Russia, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

A Chubu company official didn’t respond to a phone call or e-mail seeking comment. Officials from Peru LNG and Hunt Oil Co., the majority shareholder and operator of the South American producer, didn’t respond to an e-mailed request seeking comment outside office hours.

Japan, the world’s largest buyer of LNG by volume, doesn’t have any long-term supply contracts with Peru, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

LNG has replaced nuclear power as the nation’s primary fuel for power generation since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami led the government to shut the country’s reactors. Japan imported a record 87.3 million tons of gas in 2012 and paid 6 trillion yen ($62.8 billion), twice as much as the year before, according to customs data.
