Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Aston Villa beat West Ham 2-1 to move out of the relegation zone in English soccer’s Premier League today.
Christian Benteke converted a penalty and Charles N’Zogbia scored from a free kick at Villa Park. West Ham’s score came from an Ashley Westwood own goal late in the game.
Villa rises two places to 17th in the 20-team standings. West Ham stays 11th. The bottom three teams are demoted at the end of the season.
Later today league leader Manchester United hosts Everton and can stretch its lead to 12 points after defending champion Manchester City lost 3-1 at Southampton yesterday.
Also yesterday, Chelsea beat Wigan 4-1, Norwich and Fulham drew 0-0, Stoke defeated Reading 2-1 and Arsenal won 1-0 at Sunderland. Bottom club Queens Park Rangers lost 4-1 at Swansea and Tottenham beat Newcastle 2-1. Liverpool hosts West Brom tomorrow.
