Mali, Ghana Advance to Africa Cup of Nations Soccer Semifinals

Mali defeated host South Africa 3-1 in a penalty shootout and Ghana beat Cape Verde 2-0 to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations soccer semifinals.

Mali goalkeeper Soumaila Diakite made two saves in the shootout and his teammates converted all three of their attempts. The game in Durban went to penalties after finishing 1-1 after extra time.

In the opening quarterfinal in Port Elizabeth, Mubarek Wakaso came off the bench to score twice in the second half to give Ghana the victory.

Mali play Ivory Coast or Nigeria in one semifinal on Feb. 6, while Ghana meets Burkina Faso or Togo. The remaining two quarterfinal matches will be played tomorrow.
