Louis Luyt, who helped negotiate the return of South African rugby to international sport after apartheid, died after a long illness, the South African Rugby Union said. He was 80.

Luyt, head of the organization when the country hosted and won the World Cup in 1995, died at his home near the eastern city of Durban, SARU said in an e-mailed statement today.

“He was always a great mentor, for most of us involved in the game, and we always strove to attain the very high standards that he set,” Kevin de Klerk, president of the Johannesburg-based Lions union, said in a separate statement.

Luyt, who became a lawmaker in the nation’s parliament after resigning from SARU in 1998, started the Citizen, one of the country’s daily newspapers.
