Zurich Airport Halts Traffic After Fire Alarm at Control Office

Zurich airport halted all air traffic this morning after a fire alarm at an air traffic controllers’ office in Duebendorf, Switzerland.

No flights moved between 8:53 a.m. and 9:07 a.m. at Switzerland’s busiest airport, after Skyguide air traffic controllers had to leave the building, spokeswoman Sonja Zoechling said by telephone. A “few” planes are affected by delays, while one flight was canceled, she said.

Zurich airport reported 233,061 aircraft takeoffs and landings in 2012, or an average 639 per day, and the airport was used by 24.8 million passengers. Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s Swiss unit uses Zurich as its hub.
