U.K. Wheat Imports Top Exports for Sixth Month, AHDB Says

The U.K. was a net-importer of wheat for a sixth consecutive month in November, after excess rain last year reduced the domestic harvest.

Wheat purchases climbed to 225,262 metric tons in November, against exports of 97,641 tons, the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board said today in an e-mailed report, citing customs figures. Imports were the highest for the month since November 1993. Cumulative imports in the marketing year that began July 1 were 1.04 million tons, compared with exports of about 477,000 tons.

The U.K. had its second-wettest year on record in 2012, according to the Met Office, the national weather forecaster. Farmers harvested 13.26 million tons of the grain, 13 percent less than a year earlier, according to the the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. Premier Foods Plc, the maker of Hovis brand bread, said Jan. 10 it will use some imported wheat because of difficulty finding grain from domestic sources.
