Kazakh 2012 Industry Output Rose 0.5%, Below Government Forecast

Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Kazakhstan’s industrial production increased 0.5 percent in 2012 from a year earlier, trailing the government’s forecast.

Copper production jumped 8.5 percent to 367,200 metric tons in the period, the state statistics agency in the capital, Astana, said in a statement e-mailed today. Rolled-steel output slumped 23.6 percent to 2.4 million tons in the period, while ferroalloys advanced 3.3 percent to 1.7 million tons, it said.

The Economic Development and Trade Ministry in October predicted 2012 growth in industrial output at 2.7 percent, 0.9 percentage point less than it had previously projected. The economy of central Asia’s biggest energy producer may expand 5 percent to 6 percent this year, central bank Chairman Grigori Marchenko said Jan. 9.

Production of oil and gas condensate output decreased 1.1 percent to 79.2 million tons last year, while natural gas grew 1.8 percent to 40.3 billion cubic meters, the agency said.
