A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit near Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A tsunami isn’t expected.
The earthquake struck 223 miles (360 kilometers) south-southeast of Ambon, Moluccas, Indonesia, at a depth of 98 miles, the USGS said on its website. The temblor was too deep to generate a tsunami, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin on its website.
The magnitude of the earthquake was initially reported as 7.1.
