Irish Grain Area Seen Dropping as Potato Cultivation Advances

Farmers in Ireland planted 4.4 percent less grain this year than the previous season, while the potato area increased, the Central Statistics Office said.

About 284,200 hectares (702,300 acres) of cereals were sown as of June, down from 297,400 hectares a year earlier, the agency said today in a report on its website. The wheat area dropped 5 percent to 89,500 hectares while barley sowings slid about 4.1 percent to 173,100 hectares, it said. Potato plantings were 12,300 hectares, up 19 percent from last year.

Ireland’s cattle herd totaled 6.75 million head as of June, up 4 percent from a year earlier, including 1.14 million dairy cows, according to the report. The sheep herd expanded by 6.5 percent to 5.15 million head.
