Enel Awards Contract to Nec Corp. for Energy Storage Device

Enel SpA, Italy’s biggest utility, awarded a contract to the Japanese technology company NEC Corp. for the supply of one of its systems that can store energy generated from intermittent renewable power sources.

Enel, which awarded the contract through its unit Enel Distribuzione, plans to install NEC’s lithium-ion battery technology at a substation in Calabria in Italy’s south, the Rome-based utility said today in an e-mailed statement. It’s one of the largest lithium-ion storage systems in Europe, it said.
