Tigers Beat Yankees 6-4 in MLB Opener of AL Championship Series

Oct. 14 (Bloomberg) -- The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees 6-4 in 12 innings in the opening game of the American League Championship Series.

The Tigers lost a 4-0 lead in the ninth inning when Ichiro Suzuki hit a two-run homer followed by one by Raul Ibanez to tie the Major League Baseball game at Yankee Stadium.

Delmon Young knocked in the winning run in the 12th with a double. Andy Dirks followed with a run-scoring single.

Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter fractured his left ankle in the top of the 12th inning. He will be out for the rest of the postseason.

The teams meet in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series tomorrow.

The Yankees are the 5-2 favorite to win the World Series, according to the Las Vegas Hotel’s Super Book. The Tigers and San Francisco Giants have 11-4 odds, with the St. Louis Cardinals at 3-1.

The Giants and Cardinals open their National League Championship Series tomorrow.
