Davids Joins English Fourth-Tier Club Barnet as Player-Coach

Former Netherlands midfielder Edgar Davids joined English fourth-tier soccer club Barnet as joint head coach and will also seek to resume his playing career, the team said.

Davids, who’s played for clubs including Ajax, AC Milan, Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur, will become joint head coach alongside Mark Robson at the club, Barnet said in a statement on its website. Davids, 39, also intends to play for the team that currently occupies last place among England’s four professional soccer leagues.

“The capture of Davids is a statement of intent by our club to improve results and lay further foundations for the future,” Paul Fairclough, the club’s director of football, said in the statement. “Edgar is a world-renowned footballer and will be a great example to all our young players.”

Davids, who played 74 times for the Netherlands national team, has been out of soccer since a brief stint with London club Crystal Palace in 2010. He first retired as a player when his second stint at Ajax ended in 2008.

Davids won one Champions League title, one UEFA Cup and three national championships in Italy and the Netherlands. He first retired from football when his second stint at Ajax ended in 2008.
