Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Azerbaijan assured Iran it won’t support military action against its neighbor, said Ali Hasanov, head of the social and political department of President Ilham Aliyev’s office, the Media Forum news service reported.
“We are telling Iran unequivocally: Do not expect betrayal from us,” Hasanov said in an interview, according to Media Forum. “We are telling them: We will not be used as a launching ground in attacks against you.”
Energy-rich Azerbaijan, which has a population of 9.3 million, has a 756 km (470 mile) common border with Iran. Most Azeris also share Iran’s Shiite religion.
