Watson-Simpson Win at Ryder Cup, Give U.S. 9-4 Lead Over Europe

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson beat England’s Justin Rose and Francesco Molinari of Italy at the Ryder Cup, golf’s premier team competition.

The American pair clinched the victory in the fourball match with a birdie at the 14th hole at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago. Watson and Simpson won 5-and-4, meaning they led by five holes with four to play.

The U.S. leads Europe by nine points to four. The U.S. needs 14 1/2 points to reclaim the cup, while Europe needs 14 points to retain it. The event concludes with 12 singles matches tomorrow.

The Americans took an 8-4 lead by winning three of this morning’s four foursomes matches.

In other fourball matches, Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar are one up on Scotland’s Paul Lawrie and Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium through 13 holes; Spain’s Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald of England are three up on Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker after 11 holes; and Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland and Ian Poulter of England are two down against Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson through 10 holes.
