Lewis Hamilton Wins Pole Position for F-1 Italian Grand Prix

Sept. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Lewis Hamilton will start from pole position in tomorrow’s Formula One Italian Grand Prix after beating McLaren teammate Jenson Button in qualifying by 1/10 of a second.

Hamilton posted a time of 1 minute, 24.01 seconds on the Monza circuit. It’s his fourth pole of the season and second in three races after winning the Hungarian Grand Prix from the front in July.

Felipe Massa qualified third, while Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso, the championship leader, will start in the 10th position.

Force India’s Paul di Resta was fourth fastest but was penalized five starting spots for a gearbox change. He’s replaced on the second row by Michael Schumacher of Mercedes.

Alonso tops the standings with 164 points, 24 more than Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, the two-time defending world champion. Red Bull’s Mark Webber (132 points), Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen (131) and Hamilton (117) round out the top five in the standings.
