Yankees Sign Free-Agent Pitcher Derek Lowe to Help in Bullpen

The New York Yankees signed free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe, who has been a closer and starter during his 16-year Major League Baseball career, the team said in a press release.

Lowe, who was an All-Star with the Boston Red Sox in 2000 and 2002, was released by the Cleveland Indians on Aug. 10 after going 8-10 with a 5.52 earned run average.

Lowe, 39, is 174-156 with a 4.01 ERA for five major-league teams.

The Yankees placed starting pitcher CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list with a sore elbow two days ago.
