UN Humanitarian Chief to Visit Syria to Discuss Relief

United Nations humanitarian chief Valerie Amos travels to Syria and Lebanon this week to discuss ways to step up relief efforts and reduce the suffering of civilians caught up in the fighting against Bashar al-Assad’s government.

During her three-day visit, which begins tomorrow, Amos will meet with Syrian authorities and humanitarian agencies including the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, as well as with families that have fled the fighting to neighboring Lebanon.

“The humanitarian situation in Syria has further worsened in recent weeks as fighting has spread in Damascus and to Aleppo and other cities,” according to an e-mailed statement from the UN office in Geneva today. “Two million people are now estimated to have been affected by the crisis and over 1 million have been internally displaced. More than 140,000 people have fled the violence and crossed into Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq.”

Amos is the UN’s under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator.
