Mancini Wants More After $23.5 Million Rodwell Signing: Roundup

The following is a roundup of soccer stories from U.K. newspapers, with clickable Internet links.

Mancini Wants More

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini wants to sign more new players this week after the Premier League champion acquired Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell for 15 million pounds ($23.5 million) yesterday, the Sun reported.

“We are still looking for other players,” the Sun cited Mancini as saying. “We are interested in all good players.”

Mancini remains keen on Liverpool’s Daniel Agger and Scott Sinclair of Swansea and also has been linked with Arsenal captain Robin van Persie, Napoli’s Edinson Cavani and Javi Martinez of Athletic Bilbao, the newspaper added.

Toure Trouble

City defender Kolo Toure was involved in an angry bust-up with Mancini after the Ivory Coast defender gave away his medal from yesterday’s Community Shield victory against Chelsea, the Daily Mirror reported.

Toure, 31, gave his medal to fans at Villa Park in frustration at being left on the substitutes’ bench for the English league season’s curtain-raiser, the Mirror added.

Van Persie Jeered

Van Persie, who’s told Arsenal he wants to leave, was jeered by a large section of the 1,500 fans who traveled to Germany to watch yesterday’s 4-0 exhibition match victory against FC Cologne, the Sun reported.

Manchester United is yet to match Arsenal’s 25 million-pound valuation of van Persie and the Netherlands striker may be forced to see out the remaining year on his contract, the newspaper added.

Magpies Medical

Newcastle reached an agreement with Ajax on a 6.2 million-pound deal for Netherlands international Vurnon Anita, who can play at left-back or in midfield, the Daily Mail reported.

Anita, 23, is scheduled to have a medical examination today, the newspaper added.

French Pair

Tottenham is rivaling Arsenal to sign Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila and also is hopeful of beating the Gunners and AC Milan to Caen striker M’Baye Niang, the Daily Mail reported.
