June 24 (Bloomberg) -- Italy beat England 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 tie to set up a European Championship soccer semifinal against record three-time champion Germany.

Alessandro Diamanti scored the winning kick in the shootout after Ashley Cole’s penalty had been saved by Gianluigi Buffon at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine. Ashley Young also failed to score for England, while Riccardo Montolivo hit his kick wide.

Italy had 35 shots to nine for England during the 120 minutes of play and 64 percent possession. It will play Germany on June 28 in Warsaw, Poland. The other semifinal will be between defending champion Spain and Portugal the previous day.
