June 3 (Bloomberg) -- Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee won an event in Europe for a first time, finishing one shot clear at golf’s Wales Open.
The 42-year-old finished on 6-under-par 278 after an 1-over final round today at Celtic Manor, with Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, South Africa’s Richard Sterne, Denmark’s Thomas Bjoern and Joost Luiten of the Netherlands all on 5-under.
Jaidee had four previous wins on the European Tour, but all at events held in Asia. The most recent was at the Ballantine’s Championship in South Korea in 2009.
Jaidee, who collects a check for 300,000 euros ($373,000), had a double-bogey, three bogeys and four birdies today.
