South African Stocks: Anglo, Billiton, Gold Fields, Evraz Move

April 5 (Bloomberg) -- The FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index advanced 1 percent to 33,732.20 by the close in Johannesburg.

The following were among the most active equities in the market today. Stock symbols follow company names.

Anglo American Plc (AGL SJ), the diversified miner that makes up about 9 percent of the index, rose 1.5 percent to 286.57 rand. Copper for three-month delivery rose as much as 1 percent, its first gain in three days.

BHP Billiton Ltd. (BIL SJ), the world’s biggest resources company, jumped 2.6 percent to 237.74 rand.

Business Connexion Group (BCX SJ), an information and communications technology company, closed at its highest in two weeks, rising 1.1 percent to 4.75 rand. Earnings per share for the six months through February rose as much as 115 percent from a year earlier, the company said today.

Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI SJ), the country’s second-biggest gold miner, added 1.2 percent to 101.98 rand, its first rise in three days. Gold futures rose from a 12-week low as Spain’s escalating debt woes spurred demand for a haven.

Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium Ltd. (EHS SJ), a steel producer, declined the most in two weeks, falling 8.1 percent to 27 rand. Rand Merchant Bank, the investment-banking unit of FirstRand Ltd., said it will sell its stake in the company as it disposes of its equity holdings.
