Shell Agrees to Supply LNG to JX Nippon in 17-Year Agreement

JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corp., Japan’s biggest refiner, agreed to buy about 3.4 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas over 17 years from Royal Dutch Shell Plc, according to a statement.

Singapore-based Shell Eastern Trading Ltd. will supply three cargoes, or about 200,000 tons, a year from 2015 on a delivered basis to import terminals in Hachinohe and Mizushima, the Tokyo-based company said in a statement on its website today.

Japanese buyers are seeking LNG from international companies in addition to purchases from countries such as Qatar or Indonesia to ensure security of supply.

Chubu Electric Power Co., the third-largest utility in Japan, agreed to buy about 8 million tons of LNG from BP Plc over 16 years, according to a Feb. 10 statement on Chubu’s website.
