FCC Says It Won’t Lift Prohibition on LightSquared Operations

Feb. 14 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Communications Commission said it won’t lift a prohibition on commercial services by billionaire Philip Falcone’s LightSquared Inc.

The commission’s determination follows a recommendation from other federal agencies that LightSquared causes interference to global-positioning systems, Tammy Sun, an FCC spokeswoman, said today in an e-mailed statement. The FCC statement came after an Obama administration adviser found that the GPS interference couldn’t be mitigated.

LightSquared’s proposed deployment would disrupt navigation gear including equipment used by aircraft, Lawrence Strickling, administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, said in a letter today to the FCC. The FCC has final say over whether Reston, Virginia-based LightSquared may begin commercial operations.
