Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Siberian weather conditions across Ukraine left 30 people dead and forced the government to shut schools across the country as temperatures plunged below 20 degrees Celsius, the Ministry for Emergency Situations said.

More than 544 people were hospitalized for frostbite, the ministry said today in a statement on the government website.

The country closed 3,211 schools as of yesterday, according to the Education Ministry. Schools in the capital Kiev will close from tomorrow until Feb. 5 as temperatures are forecast to drop below 28 degrees Celsius, the city’s council press office said today in an e-mailed statement.
