Vonn Wins Women’s World Cup Downhill; Cuche Captures Men’s Race

Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Lindsey Vonn won the women’s World Cup downhill in Switzerland, while Didier Cuche captured the men’s event in Germany.

Vonn of the U.S. posted a time of 1 minute, 43.65 seconds in St-Mortiz to finish ahead of Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany and Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein. It was Vonn’s 49th career victory and increases her lead in the overall World Cup standings to 352 points over Slovenia’s Tina Maze.

Cuche made it two straight downhill victories with a winning time of 1:09.10 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Canada’s Erik Guay was second, with Austria’s Hannes Reichelt third.

Cuche leads countryman Beat Feuz, who finished 23rd, by 69 points in the downhill season standings. Croatia’s Ivica Kostelic has a 75-point lead over Austria’s Marcel Hirscher in the overall standings.
