South African Stocks: Anglo, AngloGold, Kap, Steinhof, Lonmin

The FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index advanced to a record, gaining 1.3 percent to 34,065.49 by the close in Johannesburg, its first rise in three days.

The following were among the most active equities in the South African market today. Stock symbols follow company names.

Anglo American Plc (AGL SJ), the diversified miner that accounts for about 9 percent of the index, rose the most in more than two weeks, adding 2.1 percent to 337 rand. The company said iron-ore output increased 5 percent in its fiscal fourth quarter.

Anglo American Platinum Ltd. (AMS SJ), the world’s-biggest producer of the metal, closed at its highest in almost two months, climbing 2.9 percent to 559 rand. Spot platinum rose to its highest in more than two months, climbing as much as 2.5 percent to $1,627.25 an ounce.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (ANG SJ), Africa’s biggest producer of the metal, rose the most in more than four months, advancing 4.9 percent to 356.69 rand. Spot gold climbed to the highest in seven weeks after the Federal Reserve said it’s considering more asset purchases and expects “exceptionally low” interest rates through at least late 2014.

Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI SJ), South Africa’s second-largest gold miner, advanced 5.1 percent to 130 rand. Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd. (HAR SJ) rallied 2.8 percent to 93.37 rand.

Hudaco Industries Ltd. (HDC SJ) closed at its highest since at least August 1990 after the distributor of industrial products said its annual profit jumped 43 percent. The stock jumped 4.3 percent to 97 rand.

KAP International Holdings Ltd. (KAP SJ), an investment company, increased the most in almost a month, climbing 6.9 percent to 3.10 rand. Steinhoff International Holdings Ltd. offered to swap KAP shares for control of JD Group Ltd., a South African furniture retailer.

Steinhoff International Holdings Ltd. (SHF SJ), Africa’s largest furniture maker, added 1.2 percent to 25.19 rand.

Lonmin Plc (LON SJ), the third-biggest platinum miner, climbed 4.4 percent to 135 rand, its highest in more than a month, after saying first-quarter platinum sales rose 40 percent.
