Heavy Thunderstorms Soak Austin, Dallas, Houston With Rain

Heavy rain fell across eastern Texas and Oklahoma, prompting weather alerts from Brownsville to southern Missouri.

Austin received 5.7 inches of rain in the 6 hours ending at 5:53 a.m. local time today, according to the National Weather Service. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport received 4.26 inches in 24 hours, the weather service said.

Flood warnings were issued in the Houston area, where CenterPoint Energy said more than 5,000 customers were without power as of 11:31 a.m. Parts of Houston received more than 1.5 inches in the hour ending at 12:01 p.m., according to the Harris County Flood Warning System.

January rain has helped move much of Texas to “extreme drought” from “exceptional,” according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Exceptional is the highest level on a five-step scale.
