Chilean Stocks: Ripley and Sonda Rise; La Polar, Vapores Falls

The following companies had unusual price changes in Chilean trading. Stock symbols are in parentheses and prices are as of the close in Santiago.

The Ipsa index fell 0.6 percent to 4,219.47. The MSCI Chile index retreated 0.4 percent to 2,400.35.

Cia. Sud Americana de Vapores SA (VAPORES CC) dropped 2.3 percent to a record low 100 pesos. Latin America’s largest container shipping company raised $129 million through the sale of 630 million new shares at the minimum price of 100.81 pesos each, out of a total 1 billion new shares for sale, according to an e-mailed press release.

Empresas La Polar SA (LAPOLAR CC), the department store operator under bankruptcy protection, fell 3 percent to 195.01 pesos, its 10th day of losses and its longest losing streak in eight months. The Chilean government’s consumer protection agency lodged a Supreme Court appeal to prevent it from negotiating new credit terms with all clients that the company had previously modified unilaterally.

Ripley Corp SA (RIPLEY CC) rose 0.7 percent to 505.77 pesos. Chile’s third-largest department store operator plans to invest $272 million throughout the next four years to open stores in Colombia, it said in a statement posted yesterday on the local regulator’s website.

Sonda SA (SONDA CC) advanced 1.6 percent to 1,313 pesos, its highest price in seven months. Chile’s largest information technology services provider rose for a third day after reporting Jan. 23 after the market closed fourth quarter profit that exceeded analysts’ estimates.
