Vonn Tops World Cup Super-G in Cortina D’Ampezzo; Kostelic Wins

Skiing World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn won today’s women’s super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, for her first victory in more than a month. Ivica Kostelic took the men’s slalom in Wengen, Switzerland.

Vonn of the U.S. clocked 1 minute, 26.16 seconds to beat Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch by 0.61 seconds. Slovenia’s Tina Maze was third.

The 27-year-old American has won six times this season, including three super-G races, to move to 47 career World Cup victories. Her last victory was in a super-G at Beaver Creek in the U.S. on Dec. 7.

Vonn increases her lead over Maze atop the overall standings to 291 points, and has an 87-point advantage over Switzerland’s Fabienne Suter in the super-G competition. Suter was eighth today.

Croatia’s Kostelic moved to within 30 points of Austria’s Marcel Hirscher atop the men’s overall standings with his victory in Wengen.

Kostelic, the defending World Cup slalom and overall champion, won a super-combined, raced over a downhill and slalom, two days ago.
