Jan. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Bryan Smith scored 22 points to lead Fordham University to a 60-54 win over 21st-ranked Harvard University in college basketball.
It’s the first victory for Fordham (7-6) over a ranked team since Feb. 26, 1978, when the Rams beat No. 18 Georgetown 63-59.
Chris Gaston added 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Rams hit 49 percent of their shots from the floor and 71 percent from the free-throw line at Rose Hill Gym in New York.
Brandyn Curry scored 15 points for the Crimson, who connected on 36 percent of their shots from the floor and 50 percent from the free-throw line. Harvard (12-2) held a 27-24 halftime lead.
The game was the 11th between the Rams and the Crimson. Fordham leads the series, which started in 1962, 8-3 and has won all four meetings against Harvard at Rose Hill Gym.
