India’s Chennai Port Reopens After Cyclone Thane Downgraded

India’s Chennai Port reopened after Cyclone Thane was downgraded to a low-pressure system.

Ships have started to berth at the southern port, Chennai Port Trust Chairman Atulya Misra said by telephone today.

The cyclone struck the coastline of Tamil Nadu state yesterday with winds gusting to 125 kilometers (78 miles) per hour, forcing the port and schools to shut and damaging a paint factory. At least 33 people were killed, the Press Trust of India reported, citing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalithaa.

The cyclone was downgraded to a low-pressure system as it moved westward. As of 5:30 a.m. local time, it was located north of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department said in a bulletin.
