Bernard Pierce ran for two touchdowns as Temple University topped the University of Wyoming 37-15 in the New Mexico Bowl, giving the Owls their first bowl win in 32 years.
Chris Cover threw for 169 yards and a touchdown yesterday to help the Owls (9-4) to their second bowl win in school history. Temple’s only other bowl victory came in the 1979 Garden State Bowl II when it topped California 28-17.
Wyoming freshman quarterback Brett Smith threw three interceptions as the Cowboys dropped to 8-5 for the season and 6-7 in bowl games.
In Boise, Idaho, Tyler Tettleton scored on a one-yard run with 13 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lead Ohio University to a 24-23 win over Utah State University in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. It was Ohio’s first bowl win in school history.
The Bobcats (9-4) rallied to score the game’s final two touchdowns after trailing 23-10 with 5:51 remaining in the third quarter. Utah State fell to 7-5 with the loss.
In Las Vegas, Nevada, Brett Baer kicked a 50-yard field goal with four seconds remaining as the University of Louisianna-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (9-4) won their first bowl game with a 32-30 upset of San Diego State University.
Baer’s kick came after San Diego (8-5) quarterback Ryan Lindley capped a 10-play, 69-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Colin Lockett with 35 seconds remaining, giving the Aztecs (8-5) a brief 30-29 lead.
It was the Aztecs’ final game before leaving the Mountain West Conference to join the Big East Conference next season.
