Hormuz Strait Closure Not on Iran’s Agenda, Al Alam Reports

Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Closing the Strait of Hormuz to shipping is not on Iran’s agenda, the country’s state-run Al Alam news channel reported, citing the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

Iran believes the region needs stability and calm, ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast told Al Alam late yesterday, according to a report on the channel’s website.

Israel and the U.S. are making threats to create a war atmosphere and may consider irrational military actions, to which Iran would react, Mehmanparast said.

About 15.5 million barrels of oil a day, about a sixth of global consumption, flows through the waterway between Iran and Oman at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
