Pentagon Proposes $304 Million Guided Bombs Sale to UAE

The Obama administration notified Congress today of the proposed sale of 4,900 guided bomb kits, including 600 bunker-buster bombs, to the United Arab Emirates.

The estimated price is $304 million, the administration said. Boeing Co. of Chicago and the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant in McAlester, Oklahoma, make the weapons, according to the notice.

“The proposed sale will improve the UAE’s capability to meet current and future regional threats,” it said.

The UAE, across the Persian Gulf from Iran, hosts U.S. forces at an air base.

The package, which Congress has 30 days to approve or reject, includes 600 BLU-109 2,000-pound Hard Target Penetrator bunker-buster bombs and 600 Joint Direct Attack Munition kits that give the munitions Global Positioning System guidance.

“This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a key partner that has been and continues to be an important source for regional stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” according to material from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency sent Congress.

The proposed sale also includes 304 kits to convert bombs for use as either laser-guided or GPS-guided munitions to attack moving targets.
