Spain’s Rajoy Has Had ‘Intense’ Dialogue With Europe Leaders

Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Spanish Prime Minister-elect Mariano Rajoy has held an “intense” dialogue with European leaders and will do everything he can to ensure deficit-reduction targets are met, said Maria Dolores de Cospedal, the deputy leader of his People’s Party.

Rajoy’s four priorities as he prepares to take office next month are Europe, tackling the deficit, cleaning up the banking industry and changing Spain’s labor rules, Cospedal told a news conference in Madrid today. Rajoy said in his conversations with European leaders that the European Central Bank has an important role to play in resolving the region’s debt crisis, she said.

Rajoy met members of the party’s executive committee today as he plots a path for his government after a landslide election victory Nov. 20 that will leave him in charge of the country as it bids to avert contagion from the euro-region debt crisis. Rajoy will meet acting Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero before a Dec. 8-9 European Union summit and expects to hold a Cabinet meeting on Dec. 23, Cospedal said.
