Turkish President Gul Says Syria Has Entered ’Dead-End Road’

Syria has entered a “dead-end road” as Syrian President Bashar Assad’s crackdown on protests against his leadership increases the country’s isolation, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said.

The steps needed to stop the violence are clear, and Turkey will “strongly support” the decisions of the Arab League, Gul said in televised remarks at Esenboga Airport in Ankara before departing for an official visit to the U.K.

Turkey has approached Syria in a friendly manner and resisted outside pressure to keep the country from being isolated, Gul said. “However we see that Syria could not analyze the situation well and couldn’t implement a realistic policy,” he said. “We never hoped that Syria would come to days like this.”
