Top-ranked LSU Remains Undefeated; Three of Top Five Teams Fall

No. 1 Louisiana State University extended its undefeated streak to 11 with a 52-3 rout of the University of Mississippi while three of the top five-ranked college football teams fell to their opponents.

University of Southern California yesterday defeated No. 4 Oregon 38-35, and No. 22 Baylor beat fifth-ranked Oklahoma 45-38. Two days ago, Iowa State upset second-ranked Oklahoma State 37-31 in double overtime.

At Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi, Ron Brooks intercepted Zack Stoudt’s pass and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown 28 seconds into the game for the first of LSU’s seven touchdowns.

In the second quarter, Kevin Minter recovered Barry Brunetti’s fumble in the endzone as the Tigers took a 28-0 lead. Bryson Rose kicked a 39-yard field goal for Ole Miss to end the half at 35-3. LSU is 11-0 overall and 7-0 in the Southeastern Conference, while Mississippi is 2-9 and 0-7 in the SEC.

At Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, A.J. McCarron completed 14 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns for the Crimson Tide (10-1, 6-1 SEC) to defeat Georgia Southern 45-21. Dre Kirkpatrick returned a blocked field goal 55 yards for a score. Jaybo Shaw completed one of five passing attempts for 39 yards and one touchdown for the Eagles (9-2, 7-1 Southern).

At Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon, Matt Barkley completed 26 of 35 passing attempts for 323 yards, four touchdowns and one interception for the Trojans (9-2, 6-2 Pac-12). Darron Thomas had 23 passes for 265 yards and one touchdown for the Ducks who fell to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the Pac 12.

At Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Texas, Robert Griffin III hit Terrence Williams with a 34-yard game-winning pass with eight seconds left to play to upset the Sooners (8-2, 5-2 Big 12). Griffin connected on 21 of 34 passing attempts for 479 yards and four touchdowns for the Bears (7-3, 4-3 Big 12).

Landry Jones completed 36 passes for 447 yards and one interception for Oklahoma.

In other games involving Top 10 Bowl Championship Series-ranked schools, it was No. 6 Arkansas 44, Mississippi State 17; North Carolina State 37, No. 7 Clemson 13; and No. 10 Boise State 52, San Diego State 35.
