Iran Bans Newspaper Over Interview With Ahmadinejad’s Aide

Iranian authorities have temporarily shut a Tehran-based newspaper after it published an interview with an aide to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who criticized the president’s opponents, the daily’s managing director said.

Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency said in a report today that the newspaper had been banned for “publishing lies and insulting officials.”

In the interview published in Etemaad yesterday, Ali Akbar Javanfekr said Ahmadinejad’s government had been described by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the highest authority in the country, “as a serviceable and hardworking government,” the state-run Mehr news agency said in a report yesterday.

“If certain conservatives politicians don’t see it this way they better admit they have a problem with the leader and don’t obey him,” Javanfekr was quoted as saying.
