London Shooting Probe Claim ‘Inaccurate, Premature,’ Police Say

U.K. police said it would be “premature” to draw any conclusions about an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the death of a man in London which sparked riots across England in August.

The Metropolitan Police issued a statement today after a report in the Guardian newspaper said the Independent Police Complaints Commission inquiry would find no forensic evidence that Mark Duggan was carrying a gun when he was shot dead by police during an incident in Tottenham, north London.

“We believe the Guardian’s headline is inaccurate and misleading based on what is known at this time,” the Met statement said. “The article, and especially its headline, states as fact issues that are subject to an ongoing investigation by the IPCC, and we would reiterate that it is premature to draw any conclusions about its findings.”

Around 16,000 police officers were deployed across London during the worst wave of violent disorder since the 1980s. Twenty-two of the city’s 32 boroughs saw serious disorder on the night of Aug. 8, according to a Met statement. The riots spread to other major English cities.
