Romney Left Clean Slate In Massachusetts: The Ticker

Ticker: Romney Hard Drives

By Francis Wilkinson

In 2006, before Mitt Romney left the Massachusetts governor's office, 11 of his staff members purchased the hard drives from their state computers, the Boston Globe reported yesterday. The remaining computers in the governor's office were replaced before Democratic Governor Deval Patrick took office. In addition, Romney administration emails were erased from the government server.

Mark Nielsen, who was Romney’s chief legal counsel, told the Globe that the "longstanding practice in the governor’s office was to give employees the option to buy old equipment when they were leaving office, and certain employees, including me, did that.’’

In a follow-up article today, however, the Globe said that top aides to previous Republican Governors William Weld, Paul Cellucci and Jane Swift said they "know of no instance when state employees purchased their computer hard drive as they left the administration."

It seems Romney wanted to leave little trace behind as he campaigned for the 2008 Republican nomination for president. Now the state is missing potentially valuable historical data.

There oughta be a law.
