Most Icelanders Want to Complete EU Accession Talks, Poll Shows

Most Icelanders want the island to complete European Union accession talks, according to a poll conducted by Capacent Gallup for the European Movement Iceland, a group that supports membership, and published by Frettatiminn.

Voter support for continuing the application process and putting EU membership to a referendum was 53.1 percent, the Reykjavik-based newspaper said today. The poll showed that 46.9 percent of voters want to withdraw Iceland’s membership bid.

Iceland started EU entry talks in July 2010 and will probably vote on accession in early 2013. The island has completed talks in four of the EU’s 35 policy areas and the next negotiations are slated for December. The primary challenges facing the talks will be in matters relating to agriculture, environment and fisheries, according to the bloc’s Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule.

Capacent polled 811 people and of those polled, 60.1 percent responded. Frettatiminn didn’t provide a margin of error.
