Duke’s Krzyzewski Earns Record 903rd Win in Blue Devils Victory

Duke University coach Mike Krzyzewski captured his 903rd victory to set a men’s Division I college basketball record as the Blue Devils defeated Michigan State 74-69 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Krzyzewski, 64, broke the record he shared with mentor Bob Knight, who coached Krzyzewski at Army. Knight was at the game last night as an ESPN analyst and shared an embrace with his former point guard after Andre Dawkins scored 26 points and Duke (3-0) used a 20-1 second-half run for the win.

“The basketball gods are good,” Krzyzewski said in a televised interview. “They put two guys who’ve done a lot in the game together, special moments, and tonight is another one of those special moments.”

Fans carried signs saying “Best Koach Ever,” referring to a man known throughout college basketball as “Coach K.” After the game, Krzyzewski received a game ball on the court from Mark Emmert, president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Krzyzewski, whose record is 903-283, has led Duke to four national championships in 31 seasons. The Hall of Fame coach also has a record 79 victories in the NCAA tournament.

Knight, 71, went 902-371 and won three national championships as a coach at Army, Indiana University and Texas Tech University.

“It’s neat for a coach and his former player to have the opportunity to win this many games while each one was coaching at nearly the same time,” Knight said in a statement. “The history of college basketball has had no better coach than Mike Krzyzewski.”

Also last night, Kentucky defeated Kansas 75-65 at Madison Square Garden, Ohio State won 81-74 against visiting Florida and Syracuse won 98-74 at home against Albany.
