Ex-Penn State Coach Sandusky Says He’s Innocent of Abuse

Nov. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant football coach at Penn State University charged with sexually abusing children, denied he was a pedophile and admitted he showered with young boys, according to an interview with Bob Costas airing tonight on NBC News’ “Rock Center.”

Sandusky, 67, claimed he was innocent of charges of sexual assault on eight boys from 1994 to 2009, when he ran a charitable children’s organization, The Second Mile.

“I say that I am innocent of those charges,” Sandusky said in a telephone interview with Costas, according to NBC’s website. “I could say that I have done some of those things. I have horsed around with kids. I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact.”

Allegations against Sandusky led to the firing last week of head coach Joe Paterno, who had the most wins in major college football history, amid criticism that he didn’t do enough to stop the alleged abuse.

A defensive coordinator under Paterno, Sandusky was charged this month with 40 counts of sexually abusing the eight boys.

Penn State’s board fired Paterno and President Graham B. Spanier last week. Athletic Director Tim Curley, 57, and Senior Vice President Gary Schultz, 62, were charged with perjury and failure to report the allegations. Paterno wasn’t charged.
