Nov. 14 (Bloomberg) -- German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government wants Greece to remain a member of the euro region.
“We want Greece to stay in it, that everybody stays in it,” Schaeuble said in an interview on Phoenix television. “We also want to help them to stay in it. But if a country can’t carry the burden or doesn’t want to carry the burden, and the Greek people have to carry a heavy load, then we have to respect the decision of this country.”
While euro region members can’t force a country that wants to leave the currency bloc to remain a member, “we’re not throwing anybody out,” Schaeuble said.
To make the euro region stable on a lasting basis, deficit limits have to made enforceable, which includes automatic sanctions against deficit sinners, Schaeuble said.
