Salehi Says Iran Won’t Stop Civil Nuclear Program, Spiegel Says

Iran doesn’t plan to withdraw from its civil nuclear program, which would jeopardize the country’s independence, Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi was cited as saying in an interview with Germany’s Spiegel magazine.

Salehi dismissed the International Atomic Energy Agency’s report indicating that Iran is working on nuclear weapons, which he said were denounced as un-Islamic in a ruling by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s top authority, Spiegel reported.

“They are ’haram,’ forbidden,” Salehi was cited as saying in the interview. “That’s why this weapon of mass destruction doesn’t play a role in our defense strategy.”

Salehi also said Iran will call the IAEA and its director general, Yukiya Amano, to account over the conclusions of the report, according to Spiegel.
