Toshiba, Hitachi Plant Picked to Conduct Radiation Tests

Toshiba Corp. and Hitachi Plant Technologies Ltd. were among companies selected by the Japanese government to carry out radiation decontamination tests following the Fukushima disaster.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency selected 25 companies and institutions including Obayashi Corp., Taisei Corp. and Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., the government-affiliated agency said in a statement today. The decontamination projects are scheduled to be completed by Feb. 29, the agency said last month.

Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant has been leaking radiation since the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disabled power and cooling systems leading to three meltdowns and forcing 160,000 people to flee their homes. The government plans to budget more than 1.1 trillion yen ($14.2 billion) for decontamination by the end of the next fiscal year, Goshi Hosono, the minister in charge of responding to the nuclear crisis, said in Sept. 30.

Most of the selected companies and institutions proposed technologies that help filter radioactive materials or reduce the volume of contaminated soil, according to the statement. Toshiba, which supplied a radioactive water treatment system at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, will test its technology to collect radioactive cesium from soil, it said.

Taiheiyo Cement Corp., Toda Corp., Kumagai Gumi Co., Maeda Corp. and Sato Kogyo Co. were also picked.
