Clarke Resists as Australia Struggles in First S. African Test

Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Australia captain Michael Clarke provided half of his team’s runs on the opening day of the first cricket Test against South Africa as the tourists struggled to 214-8 when bad light ended play early.

Clarke remains unbeaten on 107, with Peter Siddle yet to score. Shaun Marsh, 44 runs, and Mitchell Johnson, 20 runs, were the only other batsmen to reach double figures today in Cape Town.

Dale Steyn, ranked as the No. 1 Test bowler by the International Cricket Council, claimed 4-31, with Vernon Philander taking 3-54 on his debut.

Australia hasn’t lost a Test series in South Africa since the Proteas were re-admitted to international cricket in 1991. A 1-1 draw in 1994 was followed by four series victories.

This series incorporates two Tests, with the second match in Johannesburg from Nov. 17 to 21.
