CoffeeNetwork Raises Vietnam Coffee Crop Forecast by 9.5 Percent

Nov. 8 (Bloomberg) -- The coffee crop in Vietnam, the world’s largest producer of the robusta variety, will be 9.5 percent higher than a previous estimate in the season started last month, according to researcher CoffeeNetwork.

The nation will produce a record 23 million bags of 60 kilograms (132 pounds) in 2011-12, said Andrea Thompson, the Belfast, Northern Ireland-based head of research and analysis at the company. The crop was previously estimated at 21 million bags, she said at a conference in Antwerp, Belgium of Sept. 13.

Vietnam’s output will reach a record because of “sustained high prices in the last couple of years,” Thompson said by phone today. The weather and improved husbandry also helped the crop, she said, adding that it’s too early to say if recent rains will delay the harvest there.

Robusta beans are used in instant coffee and are harvested in Asia and parts of Africa.
