Ukraine Reopens Four Probes Into Jailed Ex-Premier Tymoshenko

Ukraine’s tax police reopened four criminal cases into ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, less than a month after she was jailed for seven years for abuse of office, her lawyer said.

The State Tax Service informed Tymoshenko of the decision on Nov. 4, Serhiy Vlasenko told reporters today in the capital, Kiev. The cases relate to United Energy Systems, a company Tymoshenko used to run, he said, adding that two date back to 2001, while two are from 2003.

Tymoshenko, 50, was sent to prison on Oct. 11 for abusing her power when serving as premier by signing 10-year gas-supply and transit agreements with Russia in 2009. The former prime minister, now an opposition leader, has said the trial was engineered by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to prevent her from participating in parliamentary elections next year.

While the European Union has warned the verdict may have “profound implications” for bilateral relations, Yanukovich said Oct. 17 that protests from the bloc won’t lead to Tymoshenko’s release.
